Gouache swatch creation

Portrait 1, 17.5 x 24, Gouache on watercolor paper on matte board

I used the gouache swatches to make a portrait that has movement.
I still need to work on it. I feel that the squares are still visible more in some areas than the image I want to portray itself.

Here is the original image I used as a reference:

  1. After seeing the photo I can't stop seeing the eye you included in the cut out, which I find very successful. The only thing I'm not so sure about is the background, unless that was a large swatch you originally wanted to cut out from, which should be fine for this assignment.

  2. you did something daring and it paid off the resemblance is there keep going forward on it, the final evolution of this is going to be really pretty.

  3. I totally agree with KC the composition of his face moving is really good, but I wish the ground was a solid color it feels like a distraction. His head gives me a feeling of pixels.

  4. I agree with Emmanuel. Your approach is very innovative and different. I think it'll be very interesting to see how far you can take this idea of movement. Even though, right now the background of this piece does help with that very nicely. For me, the visible areas of white don't bother me that much because I can see how the composition is made up of tiny squares, instead of a solid black shape.

  5. The eye is such a cool thing you included in your piece. And overall I think its a successful first attempt because you discovered some really cool things about how to pull off something like this. Maybe next time either being more consistent with the strokes in the background, or more haphazard with them is something to try next.

  6. I think this piece really speaks for itself. It's strong and daring and that keeps me hooked. I love the approach you took to this assignment. I do have to disagree with KC I think that the crazy background really gives movement and chaos making it such a strong piece.

  8. To create a double exposure using paint swatches is a risky move, but this piece has a strong presence and it tells a story.

  12. I love the affect you got from the paint and swatches used in this. The shape it makes is interesting but it needs to stand out more from the background.
